Global Market Day- planning meeting 14th March

Posted 12 March 2011, 12:27 PM by Melody Groenenboom. Permalink

This year we are excited to see the continued efforts of the church in standing up for the rights of the oppressed around the world! As well as the fairtrade market day (previously known as Global Market Day, new name and branding TBA) towards the end of the year, we will be hosting some other events and campaigns to help our community act justly, love mercy and walk humbly.

If you would like to be involved in the planning of these events or are keen to check out what this is all about, we would love to invite you to our first meeting on Monday 14th March at 7:30PM at the church. All are welcome, and if you can't make it but would like to, contact Melody Groenenboom at mgroenen@gmail.com to catch up.

Look forward to seeing you there!

I'll tell you what it really means to worship the Lord. Remove the chains of prisoners who are chained unjustly, free those who are abused! Share your food with everyone who is hungry; share your home with the poor and homeless. Give clothes to those in need, don't turn away your relatives. Isaiah 58:6-7

How do we handle change?

Posted 9 March 2011, 10:09 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

9AM: Whenever the Gospel seizes our hearts, and God moves us into mission, challenges will arise. Acts 8 shows us how the church dealt with new developments, and how they managed to change their views on long held matters. These are incredibly difficult things to deal with even today, but in Acts 8 God lays out some important principles that can help us handle change in a way that helps us and honours him.

Is your BBQ still at RCRC?

Posted 9 March 2011, 10:24 AM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

Hi church,

Late last year some BBQs were used at RCRC, and it's great that people have been so free to use their things for RCRC ministry. There are still several of these BBQs on the property. It would be great if you could come and take them home, as it can't be good to have them exposed to the elements.

If you have any questions, please call Tess or Dave

Breaking Barriers

5PM: There are few things worse than being written off. Too slow. Too old. Too young. Too inexperienced. These labels put a barrier up and are all about exclusion. As we go through the book of Acts we have been seeing that when it comes to the gospel, what once were barriers, are barriers no more. The great news of Jesus is that God is at working extending grace and forgiveness to those previously written off and excluded. People like you and me. People like those we might have written off as well...

Howdy from Ettiene!

Posted 8 March 2011, 10:44 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

Hi Church,

It's been almost a month since I have left for Geelong! Time does indeed go by quickly. This is just a short letter to first of all say 'thank you' for your support and prayer for both Dana and myself during this time. It is indeed a time of great shaping, moulding and forming for us. Knowing that we are grounded in a loving and caring community of Jesus, gives us great hope and great comfort! So thank you. My studies are going well so far and I am enjoying the adventure, except for the cold, believe it or not... I will be back in Brisbane over Easter for a few weeks and I really look forward to seeing you all then. Until then, know that I am praying for you as a church and I really do miss you all.

Help Support Chaplaincy in Schools

Posted 6 March 2011, 12:17 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

This advice has been received from Tim Mander, CEO of Scripture Union, Queensland. Scripture Union provides chaplains to state schools in Queensland. The information contained in this email, however, is relevant to chaplaincy in any State.

We encourage you to make a response to the paper, and uphold the value of Chaplaincy in Schools.

= = = = = = = = = =

If you ever wanted to voice your support for the value of SU QLD chaplains and the contribution they make in our schools and communities, now is the time!

You see, the Federal Government recently released a Discussion Paper on the School Chaplaincy program, and it is now asking for responses.  In fact, your feedback on the Paper is vital. It will provide the Federal Government with information to make an informed decision about the basis of future funding of the National School Chaplaincy Program (NSCP).

By the way, you should know that the Federal Government has already committed itself to extending the federal funding of School Chaplaincy until the end of 2014.

The Discussion Paper, which is overwhelmingly supportive of the NSCP, provides an opportunity for all stakeholders with firsthand experience of the powerful and supportive work of our school chaplains in their schools and communities to make their voices heard. Stakeholders include Local Chaplaincy Committees, Principals, teachers, support staff, students, parent and community groups, church communities and volunteers.

We all have until 18 March 2011 to comment on the Discussion Paper.

THE FOUR KEY ISSUES

The four key issues, as highlighted in the Discussion Paper by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), are:

1.       Minimum qualifications for chaplains;

2.       Minimum standards for service providers;

3.       The option for a secular pastoral care worker instead of a chaplain; and

4.       Flexible models of delivery of chaplaincy in remote and rural settings.

If you would like some guidance in answering some of the questions in the Discussion Paper, I have provided below a link to SU QLD's responses.

THE TIME FOR ACTION IS NOW!

Your feedback is vital. I urge you to give a few minutes of your time to this very important issue. The vocal opponents of school chaplaincy have begun making their own submissions. We have to show the government that they represent a very small minority. But it will take every one of us to respond to this opportunity... before 18 March.

SU QLD'S RESPONSE

Some of the questions asked on the questionnaire do require some "technical" responses. I have provided a link to SU QLD's response to help those looking for some guidance on issues outside their level of knowledge. Please go tohttp://supportschoolchaplains.com.au/discussionpaper for our response. Don't copy this word for word, but use it as a guide only.

If you don't have the time to complete the whole questionnaire, go straight to question 15 and write a positive paragraph about school chaplaincy.

YOUR RESPONSE OPTIONS:

Here are three ways you can respond to this opportunity to help shape the future of School Chaplaincy in Australia:

Online questionnaire: www.surveys.dest.gov.au/nsurvey.aspx?surveyid=2505396a8674ae09927471283bed581

Posting your responses: NSCP Consultation, Australian Government, DEEWR, GPO Box 9880, Adelaide SA 5001

Sunday Services +

9AM: On Fire & Under Fire: One of the challenges about reading Acts is coming face to face with the sheer amount of opposition the people faced. This passage is another point of tension - to put it mildly - between the NT church and the leaders of the Jewish faith. Amazing things happen, and God is saying something very special to us about opposition, trouble, and trials. It's quite an eye opener! Read ahead at Acts 5:17-42

5PM: Dealing with Division: Every family knows the reality of difficulties and friction. It seems to be whenever you get people living together in close proximity there are bound to be some issues. The same is true in the church, even in the early church. This Sunday we come to Acts 6:1-7, which has the potential, more than anything else in the story so far, of creating a massive stumbling block for the early church. But what we will see, in their dealing with it, that not only is division avoided, but it actually becomes a catalyst for greater mission. What might God have to say to us, in this story?

House Sit available: Bruce Warren, pastor at Trinity Uniting Marlborough Rd, is looking for someone to house sit while he and his wife are away from mid June to September (electricity will be your only cost). If interested please call Bruce on 3207 2756

Car Washers Needed!

Posted 4 March 2011, 7:44 AM by Melody Groenenboom. Permalink

We are holding another community car wash tomorrow from 8-12, and we need your help!

If you can wash cars between

7:45-10,

9-11 or

10-12

please send Melody an email to confirm your availability (mgroenen@gmail.com).

We always receive loads of positive comments from the local community about these events, as well as raise much needed funds for worthy causes (this week's wash going to local families in need).

Thank you for your support!

If it is raining steadily and looks like it will continue at 7am tomorrow, we will postpone the carwash.

Prayer Diary

Posted 23 February 2011, 9:20 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

The Salisbury family: Peter's mother, Bev Salisbury, has this last week had surgery for bowel cancer. Today she has returned home form hospital and will find out next week about further treatment options. Further, Alexandra's mother, Mrs Emma Honig, last week had a fall and broke her pelvis. This has meant not only that Mrs Honig has had to extend her stay, but also that she is in considerable pain. Please uphold these sisters in the Lord, praying that God will bring them both to speedy and full recovery. Please also remember Peter, Alexandra and the family, at this demanding time. God's promise is that he gives us all we need

We have also seen the terrible destruction in Christchurch, New Zealand. Humanity seems so insignificant in the face of such powerful forces of nature. A number of RCRC people have family in Christchurch: Clinton, Tess, and others. Thankfully, reports indicate that all those known to us have escaped personal harm. Reports from CRCA sister churches in Christchurch indicate that one worship centre (Cornwall St) has suffered substantial damage due to liquefaction, as has the nearby retirement village. As yet, there are no reports of death or personal injury from Reformed Churches of New Zealand families - we are very thankful to the Lord for his care and protection. Please uphold civic leaders in Christchurch and beyond, who will be faced with the task of rebuilding the city, once the rescue and recovery stages have been completed. As we pray for God's nearness, we are strengthened with his promises:

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging." (Psalm 46:1-3, TNIV)

Ettiene de Wilzem has commenced his classes at RTC in Geelong. He will be away from Redlands, and his dear wife Dana, for several months. Please especially remember Ettiene and Dana at this time. We also pray for Rene Watson, our HSM Intern, as she takes on additional responsibilities.

Does God require perfection?

Posted 22 February 2011, 12:25 PM by Tessa Kippen. Permalink

Someone commented to me in the last week "I want to belong to the church of Acts 2." And it seems very attractive, like they had no problems, and everyone was included, and exciting things we always happening. What's not to love? And then we hit Acts 5, and all of a sudden it get serious. This great new community is not a perfect community as shown by Ananias and Sapphira. So what should we make of their sin, and God's immediate judgment? Is God perhaps less gracious than we think?

Fuel for Mission

Posted 22 February 2011, 12:21 PM by Tessa Kippen. Permalink

Acts 4 shows us people doing some amazing things: They overflowed in generosity and giving, and they were rich in prayer. It is an incredibly exciting picture. If we concentrate only on these human responses, however, we will miss what drove them. So, what was it? What lay behind their amazing generosity and their wonderful prayer life? Read ahead at Acts 4:23-37

Please Pray for the Doedens

Posted 17 February 2011, 10:45 AM by Tessa Kippen. Permalink

This week please pray for Paula Doedens and the family as their father has passed away. Our prayers and condolences are with the family in this difficult time.

Let's also remember Mark Nugent who has been suffering with ongoing pain in his back recently. Pray for God's healing, and patience in Mark's life.

Jesus – still changing lives

Posted 16 February 2011, 8:25 AM by Tessa Kippen. Permalink

If you want to get a message out today there are many methods. If used correctly, it is possible to communicate with thousands of people, around the world, in a matter of hours. Sadly, most of those messages aren't worth a lot. In the early church we see a gospel that is spreading fast. Not simply because the communication is being well used, but because its ‘good news' in fact the best news this world has ever seen. Sometimes in the church, with our pressure to do, act, commit, devote, we can lose sight of the fact that this Jesus is still very much good news. Read ahead in Acts 3.

What community should look like

Posted 16 February 2011, 8:23 AM by Tessa Kippen. Permalink

Have you ever wondered what heaven is like? Maybe images of fluffy clouds, angels, harps and as much pizza as you can eat come to mind. The reality is that God has given us some glimpses of eternity, and they are not where we might expect, they are actually in the church. This Sunday, as we continue our series in Acts we get a glimpse of the type of community that the gospel produces, with a new relationship with God, and one another. In this glimpse, and our experiences today, God is actually giving the world a glimpse of eternity.

Help Westside CRC Assist Flood Survivors

Posted 11 February 2011, 10:34 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

As you know, Westside has taken on the mission of helping a number of needy families in the Goodna area with helping to re-build their lives & homes after the devastation of the floods.

We have received an overwhelming response from the denomination and we are ready to go to work.

At the moment we have a family that are in desperate need of assistance from some trades people to help themre-build some or all of their home on the inside.  Sounds huge we know, but with a team and God's help we know its possible.

We are calling for Trade People to register their interest to help us by either calling Ted Hagemeijer on 0423 769 796or emailing to ted70@mac.com  Interested people can also look to our website for more info!  We are looking for Plumbers, Electricians, Plasterers, Carpenters, Tilers, Painters and Cabinet Makers.

Once we have a list of interested people we can call a meeting on site to discuss a plan of attack.  So if you have atrade could we ask you commit this to prayer.

Thanking you in anticipation of your help.

Keeping the faith!

As you maybe aware there is a major push in this state to decriminalise abortion. This push is gaining momentum and laws maybe introduced into State Parliament very soon.

There is a peaceful rally being held in Brisbane on Saturday 12 February (Queens Park) - for further information go to www.rallyforlife.org.au

Church Council wanted to bring this to your attention. The lives of those unborn need people to speak up for them.

Are you engaging in Acts?

Posted 9 February 2011, 3:28 PM by Clinton Berends. Permalink

This Sunday starts our sermon series through Acts 1-19. However, many of us have already started on the journey by participating in daily devotions. These are available in a booklet from the church office, emailed (just email tkippen@redlandscrc.org.au to get on the mailing list), or by going online to www.rcrcinteractive.wordpress.com. Online, you can also interact with others who are reading and throwing questions around of the passages and their application. This has already proven to be a great way of stimulating and growing discussion. Why not join us?

Next week, we will also begin putting the Small Group studies online at the same site. Again, there will be opportunity to engage one another from other groups as we spend time in this study. Look forward to seeing you online.
