What is following Jesus all about?

Posted 19 August 2009, 10:38 PM by Wendy Hammond. Permalink

A "Simply Christianity" course will be starting soon. This is a six week opportunity to get the very basic message about Jesus. If you're wanting to know more about Jesus, or interested to find out who he is and what he does, this is the course for you. Please let Dave (dave@redlandscrc.org.au) know if you'd like to be part of this group. Meeting times will be determined by those who form the group.

Movie to see

"Trade" a Movie worth watching (if you're over 18). Trade, currently showing at Victoria Point, lifts the lid on the ugly reality of human trafficking. The "R" rating seems mainly to have been given because of the adult themes. There are some scenes depicting violence, and others where violence is implied. A discerning and mature viewer will be challenged with the ease with which some people are kidnapped and trafficked. I found this movie a compelling expose, and a timely challenge as I write this Sunday's message on justice. There is bad language and some emotional turmoil, but for the mature believer, this movie is a disturbing yet informative introduction to the ugly reality of human slavery. - DG

Becoming like Jesus is something that we really must to do together. Why? Because the unity of Jesus' followers is essential to his mission of love in this world. In John 17:20-26 Jesus actually prays for us, in the Redlands, in 2009. He prays that we will be one, united together with himself, and loving each other like he loves us. So, what does love & unity actually look like?

What does it really mean to love another person, or to love others? And why is love so graphically connected with selflessness by Jesus? Can we expect to follow his example? How realistic is this? Read ahead at John 13:1-17,34-35

When you're led down a dark path by a guide, it requires some action on your part: you need to go with that guide. When we're led through life by the Holy Spirit, it requires some action on our part: we need to keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). So, how can we keep in step with Spirit? We walk the line, we obey, we listen, we depend. In our society it is unpopular to do this, but this is how we live by the Spirit and see the fruit of the Spirit evident in our lives. For extra reading check out Romans 7:7-8:39.

  • Remember those who are grieving: the Bos family, as well as Marijke Hartsuiker, the Clerk of CRCA Classis Queensland, whose husband Jon died last Monday following a battle with cancer.

Filled with the Spirit (Eph 5:18-20) Max Lucado recently wrote: "when it comes to the Holy Spirit, we are confused at best and frightened at worst. Confused because we've never been taught. Frightened because we've been taught to be afraid." This Sunday we want to look at what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and we want to do so in a way that deepens our desire to live as Jesus' followers bringing hope to his world. Read ahead: Eph 5:8-20

On Sunday 2nd August, the children are keen to present a mini musical to the congregation, "The World's Most Amazing Book." during the morning worship service. Parents, please encourage your children to learn their lines if they have been given a part. We have 2 Sundays left to rehearse and we want to thank you for encouraging them to try their hardest.

We also hope to have a dress rehearsal on Saturday 1st August at 3:00pm until 5:00pm so that we can rehease in the auditorium for the following day.  Just a reminder also if the children can wear denim shorts or jeans and a white shirt, if possible.

Thanks for your support,

The Holy Spirit is a gift we cannot experience apart from Jesus. Jesus promised the Spirit to all of his disciples and he sent the Spirit to us after he had returned to his Father's side. The Holy Spirit is Jesus living in us. And the Holy Spirit is our Helper - he helps become more and more like Jesus. The next few weeks we're looking at becoming like Jesus, and we begin by recognising the essential role of the Holy Spirit. Do you need a Helper? Read through John 14-15.

Christmas in July Dinner ......MISSION FUND_RAISER.....

This year the profits from the Christmas in July dinner will be going towards Natalie and Steve Flood who will be leaving for Kalimantan, Indonesia in August. The Lord willing, they will be working at the Mount Hope School for a year

Last year's dinner was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. It raised much needed funds for new Life Orphanage in Burma. This year promises to be a fun night once again and you will also be informed about another exciting event planned for later in the year on this evening.

This Sunday you will have an opportunity to RSVP at the table in the foyer at church. Put your names down or better still put down other names to fill a table of 8.

We desperately need catering numbers. If any of you have any special dietary needs, please indicate.

The cost is $30/head for a delicious 3 course meal.  Please bring your own wine or cool drinks. Water will be served at the tables.

  • Please remember the Bos family, as Eddie's mother, Wiea, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday night. At this point, we planning for a funeral on Monday, and further details will be confirmed when they are known. It's a great comfort to know Jesus' victory is the assurance of our victory over death. Come, Lord Jesus!
  • Thank God for a great Kids Games last week! Pray that the good news of Jesus will continue to bring life and hope to all who attended and their families.

Those affected are pretty much back to normal health, so we're very thankful for answered prayer. Please pray for a safe journey home and a smooth reunion with friends and family.

The beat goes on...
When we think of the Song of Songs, we often can't get past images of women with necks as long as towers, and teeth like straying, furry sheep.
But the song of songs speaks far more deeply to us than we might imagine.
There is a longing for love and acceptance deep within our hearts that is often almost impossible to satisfy.
Were does this desire come from, and how we can we find the love and acceptance that we crave?

Where do you turn when life weighs you down? What underpins your hope that you'll endure? Peter understood these questions when he wrote to exiled Christians buckling under persecution and suffering. His response may surprise, though. Not content to offer pithy 'how to' advice, he draws their attention [and ours as well] away from false hopes to focus instead upon the one who gives us living hope.

Revelation 3:7-13

The church in Philadelphia (in ancient Asia Minor, today's Turkey) is one of the two churches (two out of seven!) in the Book of Revelation which do not receive criticism from the Lord.

It's an insignificant little church: few resources, little finances, no programs, not many movers and shakers in this church.

But in the eyes of the Lord they were a mega-church! They have kept the Lord's Word, they have not denied His Name, and they practiced godly endurance.

Christ - as the only One who opens (and closes!) the Kingdom of heaven - has set before this insignificant group of Christians and open door! That is: an open door into the Kingdom, and an open door into the world!

Preacher: Keith Warren

Prayer

  • We continue to seek a buyer for the 5.5 acre property on Boundary Rd, and as people of faith we're asking God to bring this about.
  • Next week, Kids Games is underway at RCRC. Please uphold Lisa and the entire team during this busy week and also while they prepare. It is a sweet sacrifice when people give holidays and recreational leave to work in ministry!
  • Further, Lisa Keegan has decided to conclude her time as RCRC children's worker. We're very thankful for all that Lisa has been able to achieve, and we seek they Lord's blessing on her expanding work with Education Queensland. Lisa will conclude her appointment at the close of Kids Games. Please also pray that a suitable replacement can be found to continue the development of Kid's Ministry at RCRC
  • Baby Kiana (Kiki) continues to recover after her fall last week. Please remember parents Duncan & Niah, asking for peace, strength, and the warmth of the grace of God
  • This coming weekend will be a very special time for Phil & Bev Bird and also Brian & Joan Jellyman: Their children, Joel Bird and Elizabeth Jellyman will marry on Saturday. So we pray for rich celebrations of God's grace and goodness, and for his rich blessing on the life of Joel and Elizabeth as they commence their married life together
  • We have had 'utegate' which then become 'email-gate', but in Iran there is unrest, rioting, democracy protests and death. Our political system may have its flaws, but our nation is a place of peace. We need to keep perspective in this. Please uphold peoples and nations in the world who do not have stable or just government. The tragedy is that there are so many nations in this category. Please also pray for people in our own country who have seemingly intractable problems and who seem to be devoid of hope. Pray that Christs freedom will ring, and that he will use us to bring it...
