9am Sunday

Posted 28 July 2010, 8:49 AM by Margaret Nugent. Permalink

In this part of the world we learn to be independent, and to do things ourselves. "I did it my way" is an old song, but today's generation is living its creed more than ever. This has disastrous consequences for church health and undermines personal growth to a frightening degree. This is why we've been working through the process of discipleship. We have covered the three basic components: Glorify, Nurture, Bring Others. This week we tie it all together and see how the process works and what the Bible says about it. We'll be looking at how we support one another in this process and the advantages of walking this path with others. Read ahead at Col 1:1-14

Please Pray for Ella Holz

Posted 27 July 2010, 7:06 PM by Clinton Berends. Permalink

We are asking the church to pray for Ella Holz.  She had a bad fall today and hit her mouth.  Her 4 front teeth have been pushed up into her gum.  We saw a dentist this afternoon who seems to think that the adult teeth have most likely been damaged as the teeth have been pushed so far up.  We are hoping that first of all the baby front teeth will re-emerge in the next two weeks and that the adult teeth have not been damaged (or too badly).  If you could pray for that we would really appreciate it. If the baby teeth dont re-emerge we have to go to a pediatrician orthodontist to get them removed with surgery.

At the moment Ella is going OK.  She is dosed up on panadol but is still managing a laugh every now and again, but her mouth is very swollen and red.

Thank you.

Prodigal God – Order now

Posted 21 July 2010, 2:44 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

In late August Dave will start a new series called "Prodigal God". He'll be working through what we know as the parable of the Prodigal Son. There will be small group questions, and a DVD resource with brief 6min clips to use in your small group context.

Whether your small group uses the studies or not, you will love reading Tim Keller's book, "The Prodigal God". Dave says this is the best book on God's grace that he has ever read.

RCRC is prepared to place a bulk order. If you would like to order a copy, please email Margaret Nugent (click on her name, or the book image below). Please include your contact details in your email. Your email will be counted as a firm order and we will follow you up for the $15.00 purchase price.

We are constantly bombarded with sexual images and the message that sex is natural, good and for everyone. And while we affirm sex as good and from God, we realize that the Bible's sexual standards are much different from the culture in which we live. So is sexual purity possible? Is it actually doable, and if so, how? That's what we want to consider this Sunday evening as we see that our sexual purity is intimately connected to the work of Christ.

What do the following have in common: 1. your lawnmower 2. your car 3. your fishing trip 4. That fantastic double shot latte in your hand. Having trouble answering? You're no different to anyone else: we all have trouble connecting the dots. Our culture decrees that faith be separated from life, 'church' be separated from home, and Christians be separated from the rest of the world. Is it any wonder that many who are far from God think faith is irrelevant? But is the way we live helping the situation? Does the way RCRC expresses itself challenge any of this? Here's the good news challenge: God calls us to a maturity which reconnects and re-integrates life. Our mission is life affirming, Christ centred, and world changing. Come along on Sunday and find out how we can do that together.

Chaplaincy Funding and the new Prime Minister

The question that we are being ask frequently since the political manoeuvrings of a few weeks back is what difference will the change of Prime Minister make to the continuation of NSCP funding. Our response is that it will most likely be determined by how well we (i.e. us, you and other supporters of chaplaincy) across the country let the Prime Minister and Labor members of Federal Parliament know of the benefit that the chaplaincy service and chaplains are within the school and broader community. To this end the National School chaplaincy Association (NSCA) have set up a web based lobbying strategy, similar to what was done last year so that we can start writing to our local members and the Prime Minister.

Please log on to support.schoolchaplaincy.org.au to register your support for chaplaincy. Please pass this link onto your networks and others who will get behind this campaign.

With the impending election it is the right time for the government to appreciate that chaplaincy is important to the community and its continued funding will be valued.

Volunteers for Kids Games were WONDERFUL

Posted 13 July 2010, 12:38 PM by Margaret Nugent. Permalink

We just wanted to say a special THANKS to all the amazing people who contributed to Kids Games and making it such a success. It is FANTASTIC to see people who are prepared to give up their holiday time to join the team and give the kids a great and memorable time, and especially over the cold and bleak week that we had, when it would have been much easier to stay in bed! Some SPECIAL people who worked tirelessly in the kitchen to provide excellent quality morning teas and to clean up afterwards so that it can all be done again the next day. AMAZING commitment to see Bill come in and vacuum every day so it is spotless for the next day. You are all WONDERFUL and God shines through you. GREAT JOB!

Some people talk about growth in terms of 'seven quick steps' and failsafe formulas. Paul talks about growth in very different terms. He is so committed to helping people grow that it overflows in nearly everything he writes. It is natural. It is necessary. And it's not easy. So: how can we grow more? What would God have us do? How does this impact on our own lives, on how we help children and young people? How does it influence the kind of church God calls us to build? Here are a couple of passage to read so you'll be best prepared to hear what God says: Eph 1:15-23; Eph 5:14-21; Phil 1:3-11; Col 1:3-14

INSPIRE Redlands 2010 - The Granville Train Disaster

Come and hear firsthand accounts of one of Australia's most dramatic survival stories.

The Blue Mountain community, west of Sydney, still bears the scars of the terrible derailment of a crowded commuter train at Granville in 18 January 1977. The train destroyed the supports for the overpass, causing the road to collapse, crushing the carriages below. In amongst the twisted metal and slabs of concrete, 19 year old Debbie Skow lay crushed from neck to toes. Constable Gary Raymond, the 'Gentle Rescuer' risked his own life to reach her, providing life supporting aid until she was freed from the wreckage 12 hours later. Given only the slimmest chance of survival, Debbie's life has been nothing short of inspirational, including her 'impossible' pregnancy and birth of daughter Shelby. Gary went on to serve in numerous police search and rescue operations including the 1997 Thredbo landslide and 2005 Sri Lanka Tsunami.

INSPIRE Redlands 2010 will bring Gary, Debbie and Shelby together to tell their story, and to share their perspective on how people can overcome the worst adversities in life.

When: 7.30 pm, Friday 23 July 2010

Where: Lingo Lin Theatre, Ormiston College

Tickets: From $19 each at www.inspireredlands.org.au

This unique evening is suitable for high schoolers and adults. Any profits from this event will go towards Redlands school chaplains.

Sunday 5pm

This Sunday 5PM we begin our new series "The Big Ask" where we respond to the questions you have proposed. This Sunday we will be responding to the question "How do you respond to people who reject God and His Word because they claim it is a violent book?" We will be looking at some of the Old Testament passages of violence and gore, seeing where they fit into God's world and Word, and what possible explanation God might have for them. If you want some background and to get 'in the mood' I suggest you read Joshua 1-12.

See you tomorrow for Breakfast at RCRC, 8am!

Posted 9 July 2010, 10:19 AM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

Come to breakky - you know you want to!

Breakfast Meetings are some of the best ways to have some relaxed fellowship, and to share some exciting ideas about our plans and our future. Dave will be outlining some more specifics on our 'Toward Maturity' discipleship and mentoring, while Eddie Bos will help us understand how we can all help to resource it all.

Last meeting we such a great time of encouragement, and the warmth of community was just terrific. The team will be at RCRC from 6:30 to prepare a great breakfast, so it will be great to see you there. It's so important that we have a full attendance when we're talking about key developments.

1 How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity! 2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down on the collar of his robe. 3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore. [Ps 133 - The Message]

See you there!

We say we are here to 'glorify God', and in all things, but what does it really mean? Why should this word hold pride of place in what we are called to do and to be? The truth is, when we understand this, we get church in its right perspective, and we start to answer the question people have asked since the beginning: what am I really here for?: Col 3:1-17

The adoption metaphor used in the Bible does not often get a mention in contemporary Christianity, but it is actually an important facet of salvation. The Apostle Paul in Galatians 4:1-7 speaks about the position we were in prior to conversion, and what position we possess now. But what does this mean to us today? Find out by coming this Sunday evening at 5pm as Ryan Hemelaar brings the message to us.

During his life the apostle Paul had to deal with a sizeable amount of suffering. Prison, floggings, shipwrecked, hunger, and much more.

There's a long list in 2 Corinthians 11 and 12. But he made an amazing discovery: out of all these negative events, something very positive emerged! And that was the fact that it was exactly in his weakness that Paul experienced the strength of faith in Christ.

How does that work? How can we - with all the negative things that come our way - experience the same joy and contentment, in 2010?

Do you find strength in your weakness? Through Christ?

But what, there's more!!! Just when you thought "Why Church?" was over, here comes one more message to round the series off. Having looked at what the church is, and why it exists, and how we engage with God's church, this week we are going to explore what are the essential ingredients to church life. In a world where every church seems to offer their flavour, we want to ask of scripture, what God considers to be the essential elements, and by so doing, strive for them with everything we are.

You... The Mentor

Posted 30 June 2010, 9:21 AM by Margaret Nugent. Permalink

We have all heard the phrase that we are about nurturing people to maturity here at Redlands CRC. With that in mind, it would be great to start some intentional mentoring relationships get under way. This does not need to be too complicated: simply some ongoing relationships where someone can walk with another in life and what it means to follow Jesus. This would be a great way to bridge some generational divides, and to bring people together who ordinarily may not connect that often.

Why raise this now? In recent months a few people have said that they would love to have a mentor. It would be great if we could provide some!

You may wonder whether you've got what it takes: whether you know enough. Really, 'knowing the answers' is not as important as 'asking the right questions' and 'being a great listener' - and we may be able to help with that. It would involve partnering with someone of the same gender, meeting every couple of weeks (whatever works best), working through a basic plan, and some prayer together.

So here's the deal: if you're interested in exploring mentoring, there is a sign up sheet in the foyer of the church, also, please let me know. And if you're interested in being mentored, let me know. We'll provide some orientation, ongoing support, and resourcing for mentors. We'll also stay in touch with those mentored to ensure it's all working well. It could open up some wonderful contexts of grace and growth! Even if you're unsure, please let me know, and we can talk about it.

BREAKFAST MEETING

Posted 30 June 2010, 9:20 AM by Margaret Nugent. Permalink

You're invited to a Breakfast Meeting on July 10. We'll be talking about how we'll resource the next year's ministry, and seeking God's blessings on those plans. Dave and Clinton will give us an update on discipleship and some additional plans for the remainder of this year and into 2011. Eddie Bos will discuss all matters budget. We were so encouraged by the great roll up last time, and we'd love to see a strong roll up for this one as well. Please mark your diaries!

SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY

Posted 30 June 2010, 9:17 AM by Margaret Nugent. Permalink

We are all well aware of the awesome value of the school chaplaincy program.   It underwent a very rapid growth thanks to Federal Government  funding.   In the last budget, chaplaincy got another one year's worth of funding, but nothing in the forward estimates.

The recent changes in leadership of the Labour Party mean that, if Labour is re-elected,  it will be very unlikely that the federal funding for the chaplaincy program will continue. It is important that we lobby our candidates now,  to get them to get their party to commit to continue funding chaplaincy in our schools.
