9am: The Heart and Soul of Change: we all know God wants us to change, but what sort of change is it? How does it happen? What's the connection with Jesus? The question we're looking at on Sunday morning is this: is it that important? Do I need to change that much? Read ahead at Colossians 3

5pm: Kids @ Nite Celebration Service (see note below)

Kids @ Nite

The kids @ nite Celebration Service will be held on 23 September at 5pm.  The church family is invited to share this special time as the children lead the service and share with us Jesus, the "I AM".
During the service, there will be an opportunity to contribute to the kids @ nite offering for the work of Iris Ministries among the poor in Africa. To find out more about this ministry go to: www.irismin.org
There will be a full dress rehearsal for the Service on Saturday 22 September at 3pm - 4pm at the church. It is important for the smooth running of the Service that all of the children attend the rehearsal. Children will also need to be at church early (3.45pm) on the 23rd for one final run through.

Matthew Stanley Memorial Service

Monday night at 6:30 a memorial service will be held for Matthew Stanley, the young man killed at a party in Alexandra Hills one year ago. Paul and Kay Stanley have requested this and RCRC is happy to serve them in this way. Please continue to pray for the grace of God to be present: there will be young people from Redlands College and other schools, as well as many people who knew Matt or have come to know of the foundation set up t work against youth violence. Pray also for Dave and other RCRC people involved as they contribute to this service.

Update on Clinton

While we are all being kept up to date about Clinton and Tracy with eNews, the Eldership would like the RCRC family to know that we have met with Clinton and Tracy on Monday morning. We assured them of RCRC's full and total support. We have simply said to Clinton that he can take as much off as he see fit, especially as family visit in these next weeks. Clinton had intended to preach this coming Sunday, but today has decided not to do so. The Eldership fully supports Clinton in this, and encouraged him to just take leave as its required. The Eldership have given him the freedom to perform his duties and engage with his work as he sees fit. Dave will take the primary load with preaching, and in time and as necessary, Clinton's other responsibilities will be taken up by others.

We continue to call the congregation to prayer: our Lord is a mighty sovereign God, and we are all in His hands. We continue to ask for healing, believing that he will answer us in accordance with his sovereign will. His promise is to give us all that we need, and we can resolutely trust him for this (Ps 123).

Please also pray for the Leadership as people take on added responsibility. These burdens are not heavy: we count it an honour to carry them, but we do feel them. Pray for strength, grace and wisdom, and that God will bless us with reliance and grace as we follow our Saviour together.

Prayer Meeting Tonight (Wed) 6:30pm

Hi church,

We'll be gathering together for prayer again tonight (Wednesday) at 6:30pm.

The Elders encourage you to meet together and bring the needs of Clinton and Tracy and their family to our gracious God. No doubt there are other needs we can remember at this time: we still remember Debbie Thwaits, whose father died in South Africa last Sunday.

It's been great to see the wider body of Christ praying for Clinton and his family. We've had emails from Christian people in California, and one from South Africa. There are lots of emails from people all around the country: God is good, and when his people live and move in unity it is a very good thing (Ps 133)

Prayer for Clinton Calendar

Hi Church,

A weekly prayer calendar has been created with the desire that there will be constant prayer for Clinton around the clock. It has been split up into 30-minute intervals where anyone can allocate themselves to any number of these timeslots.

So if someone selects Monday 5:00pm, they pray till 5:30pm and it means that they are allocated for that timeslot for all subsequent weeks in the future. However you can unallocate yourself from a specific timeslot at any stage.

You will receive a confirmation email of your prayer time allocation, and a reminder email 6 hours before your timeslot begins.

Please let your friends that are overseas know about this, so they can allocate themselves to the late-night shifts. Thank you.

Prayer Diary: Debbie Thwait's father

This morning I had a call from Mike Thwaits, whose wife Debbie had travelled to Sth Africa earlier last week. Debbie's father, David Coles, was gravely ill with cancer. Mike had heard from Debbie that her father had died this morning. Mr Coles had come to know the Lord only recently. We give thanks for the hope of the resurrection and for the promise of eternal life. Please uphold this family in their grief, and pray that the love and mercy of Christ will strengthen them during the funeral this week. Please continue to pray for Mike & Debbie and their family that the grace and nearness of God will be their hope.

More News from Clinton and Tracy

Dear Church Family,

Today Clinton and Tracy received some more news about his condition: and we are very sad to say that it is not good news. Clinton's oncologist has advised not only that the trial would not be a possibility, but also that the likelihood of chemotherapy having any substantial impact is very small. Clinton's prognosis is not good. Any treatment he receives will not be from the point of view of a cure, but for extension of life.

Friends, this is the worst news.

So now we stand straddled between the ugly realities of this world and the glorious promises in the Gospel for the next. The only way the situation can change now is for the Lord to directly intervene. Our only hope is Jesus, who has gone before us, entering the darkness, doing battle with its ugliness on the Cross. The eldership calls you to trust in Christ, the Risen One. We remind you that even Paul, the Apostle of grace, wrestled with grief, persecution, and anguish. This is what he wrote to the Christians in Corinth:

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. (2 Cor 1:8-9)

Even the Psalms tell us that anguish is no stranger to God's people. What is different, however, is that our God strengthens us and walks with us, even through the darkest valleys (see Ps 23).

So tonight we call the church family to further prayer:

• Pray for God to intervene. We know his power, and we know his grace. Pray that our prayers and our desires might be a reflection of His will. "Not our will, but your be done, O Lord"
• Continue to bless Clinton & Tracy with your love, grace, prayers and friendship. More than ever they need to you be family for them
• Ask for wisdom and added strength for the leadership: we want to bless Clinton and Tracy with all they need at this time
• Remember God's promise "I will never leave you, I will never forsake you" (Deut 31:6)

RCRC will be open for prayer at 6:30am and 6:30pm each Wednesday.

Mark Nugent has been given the all clear to start 'safe' exercises  to strengthen his back and abdominal muscles. One of the ways the surgeon suggested was riding a stationary exercise bike.

However they do not own one, so if you have one at home that is gathering dust they would love to borrow it to help Mark recover.

9am:  Imagine doing the same job for 40 years. I could imagine that might get a little mundane, boring, some of the enthusiasm might be lost. So what happens with the New Testament church turns 40? Is there a chance that the church could also fall into this danger? 40 years after the birth of the NT church, Luke writes a story, the story so far of the church of Jesus. And as he does so, he passes on to the next generation, and to future generations a story of hearts and lives set on fire, of churches that bear bold witness to Jesus, and most importantly, of a Jesus who is alive and well, and continuing his work. But far from simply being history, Luke begins to write our story, the story that we too have become a part of. This week we begin a new series in the book of Acts, starting with Acts 1:1-11

- Tomorrow we have a new Premier: Anna Bligh. Ask for wisdom, humility, and that she might recognise the Lord who has placed her in this position of authority and leadership

An awesome display of community!

The prayer meeting tonight at RCRC saw around 100 people gather to bring the needs of Clinton, Tracy and children before the Lord. What a blessing it is to see community like that!

We gathered around Ps 73, struggling with the reality of suffering, but confessing together that it is good to be near God.

The eldership will continue to call the church family together each Wednesday at 6:30pm. The word says pray without ceasing, and the people of God say ‘we are good for that!'

Someone has offered also to open the church building at 6:30 AM each Wednesday for those who cannot make the evening time slot, and for those who would like to attend both.

So next week, you can choose whether to come at 6:30AM or 6:30PM.

Either way, we will be there and we will be praying!

Dear Church family,

The Elders of RCRC would like to call you to prayer tonight. We are doing this in response to the news we have heard today about Clinton.

Interestingly, there has been discussion among the elders over the last week or so about more regular prayer. So now we have a very clear call to do so. It would be great to make this a weekly event.

We will be meeting in the Hall from about 6:30pm to about 7:15pm

News from Clinton & Tracy...

Dear RCRC family,

This morning Clinton was told by his oncologist that the cancer which started as a melanoma has spread. Clinton has two spots on his lungs, and three on his liver. Needless to say, this has come as a shock, given the very positive results following last year's surgery and a clear PET scan just two months ago. The news is a reminder that we are dealing with a very serious situation, made more insidious by the reality that it is all so hidden, and until now had not impacted on Clinton's sense of wellbeing.

This news can have us feeling numb and confused. There are so many uncertainties! One thing we need not be uncertain about, however, is the goodness and love of our Lord. Earlier today Clinton, Tracy and I sat in their lounge room and read Psalm 46 together

God is our refuge, and our strength, an ever present help in times of trouble, therefore we will not fear... the Lord Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress... be still, and know that I am God.

The next step is chemotherapy, which will begin as soon as possible. In addition, there is also a chance to be part of a trial of some new highly acclaimed treatment. Clinton's previous medications may preclude him from participating, but his Oncologist can apply for a waiver on that condition.

We would urge the church family to pray for:

• Healing: our God is a good, loving God, and powerful. Pray urgently that he will act beyond the work of people to bring a result that glorifies his name
• Admission to the trial: ask that there be no barrier for Clinton entering the trial, and that once accepted, he will receive the fill medication, and not the placebo
• Peace: for Clinton, Tracy and their family. That they will know the Fortress, the Rock who is our God. Surround them as you would your own. You don't have to give advice, or have all the answers, just love them, bless them, and minister Jesus Christ to them
• Wisdom and Hope: for us all as we walk these paths together with Christ our Saviour

9am: "New Identity" Today there's talk about identity theft: people steal your details, your money, your name and you may never get it back. When Jesus does his work of transforming grace he does not de-personalise or steal your identity. He recreates it. He re-humanises people. And all this is possible because he defeats the very forces that separate us from God. The question we might ask is what difference this makes.

5pm: "Who gets invited to God's party?" If God were having a party, who would get invited? APEC leaders? Mr Howard? Mr Bush? And assuming there was  a party - what's the reason for the celebration?

Don Ridder, a church planter from Florida, USA will open God's word for us on Sunday night. Don is here for discussions with the Christian Reformed Churches in relation to ministry formation and mission development in local churches. Please make him very welcome.

Church Planting Meeting

This Saturday from 10am-12pm we will be continuing to look at church planting, and in particular, church planting in Redland Bay. Don Ridder, a church planter from the USA will speak to us and answer some questions for part of the time, and the rest will be devoted to developing a "Community Profile" on Redland Bay to give us a greater understanding of the community in that place.

For discussion: Elder Task & Term

As indicated a few Sundays ago, the Church Council is discussing some changes to the task of Elder, their term of service, and process of election. We would the congregation to discuss this and so have attached a document for you to read. Whilst we are not making any ‘in principal' changes, we are making these suggestions to streamline processes of election as well as introduce a little more flexibility to the term an elder serves.

We will soon be publicising an opportunity to discuss this as a congregation (an October Saturday breakfast on a date to be announced), but warmly welcome advance comment and questions which can be directed to dave@redlandscrc.org.au.

9am: So what's with all the names? If all Scripture is God breathed, why do we have passages like Rom 16? Should we take notice of them? What - if anything - can they teach us about being church in 2007? Whether you are one of those people who wonder whether the changes we have seen over recent years at Redlands are for the best, or whether you're wondering whether there's a place for you to serve, this will be an especially important Sunday for you to join us.

5pm: How do we define greatness? How do we identify great leaders? How do we identify great churches? When we read the literature (Christian and other) on the issue, we see a myriad of ideas, goals and suggestions. But Jesus himself has a lot to say, and some of it is extremely challenging. Because in the kingdom economy, greatness is not defined by how many serve us, but on how many we serve. Read ahead in Matthew 20:20-28

9am: What do you focus on, the journey, or the destination?

As followers of Jesus we know that we have so much in store for us when Jesus comes again. Its going to be great, more than we can every imagine, and it will make the things of this life seem pale. But that doesn't mean we put our heads down and duck for cover until that day.

As Jesus walks along the road in Luke 9, 3 potential disciples are ‘tested' for their suitability. And as we see Jesus' response to them, we see that there is something important in the journey - Jesus is not just inviting people to wait for heaven, he is inviting disciples.

5pm: Sometimes when we read that Bible, and we are honest about what we are reading, that only conclusion that we can come up with is "That's simply not possible."

Luke 17:1-10 is one of those passages. Its demands are too big, its expectations are too huge for me. But maybe that's the point. Maybe the point is that what is impossible with me, actually is possible with God. What I can not do, God is doing, as he grows me to make me more like Jesus.

9 am: Our goal is to have more and more people become followers of Jesus Christ, and to do that we all need a very clear understanding of the sort of community he wants us to build.

What we find in the Bible is that Jesus builds a transformational community which had an unmistakable impact on the world around them and beyond. What a blessing that we get to share that mission in our part of the world today!

11am: RCRC Community - Welcoming Luncheon. If you are new to RCRC then you are invited to a Welcome to the RCRC Family Luncheon.

This will be a time of getting to know one another, meeting the Pastors Dave and Clinton and the RCRC Elders - a time of fellowship and food and a brief overview of the church, its ministries and missions.

This Sunday, in our 5pm service, a number of our people are going to be doing there profession of faith. These people are: Dylan Greeff, Jo Kippen, Tracy Montgomery, Matt Kippen, Rob Ferguson, Lachlan Black, Lily Sikkema, Sarah Bos, Ben Rowan and Ryan Salisbury.

This is basically their statement that they believe that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior, and that they are followers of Him.

Also at this time, Dylan, Rob, Ben and Ryan will be baptized as a symbol of Christ's work in bringing them new life.

It's a great day for them, their families and for us as a church. It will also be a great opportunity for you, your children and your friends to hear of God's work in their lives through Jesus.

To help us celebrate this occasion, we are encouraging everyone to bring a plate of food to share at the end of the service, and then hang around to meet these guys, and others.

New Life Orphanage: Burma
