Hi everyone!!

Just wanted to say thank you so much for supporting the kids movie night on Saturday night.  We had over 50 children there!

Thanks also for all the donations of non-perishable food that came in on Sunday and the donations for the kids in Burma.  We will be collecting right up until Christmas.

Your support is much appreciated

We live in a very strong 'success' culture. We want to appear successful and to have it all together. No one likes to admit to any weaknesses. And the same goes for the church as well. We want to present a good, strong image, that we know what we are doing, and we are doing things right. But when we look at the Bible, and history, we see something that is very worrying for successful churches. Because we see that revival means repentance. Revival means grieving over sin, recognizing that we haven't got it right, and that we need to do things God's way. Is the church willing to go the way of humility, for true revival? Are we willing to sacrifice 'self' for the path of Jesus?

Message from Dave

Hi Church Family,

By now, many of you will know that I'll be taking something of a 'sabbatical' until the end of January 2010. The last few weeks I have been in discussion with the leaders here at RCRC, and in view of how demanding the last years have been, the Elders have prayerfully and warmly encouraged me to take this time off. I think the timing is good and right, as I do feel the need for some replenishment. I have to say: it has been just tremendous to have the warm support of RCRC leaders and congregation in this. I cannot tell you how thankful I am for your warm affirmation.

I want to assure you that I am as committed as ever to ministry at RCRC, and still plan to retire here (that's at least 15 years away!). So, this is (definitely) not Dave 'burning out', but Dave accepting the leadership of RCRC's advice to take some replenishment leave, so that that sort of situation can be avoided well before it might arrive. To tell the truth, I feel great, and totally buoyed by the support and encourage God gives me through you all.

Apart from a few things, almost done, like this Saturday's wedding with Paul & Josie, and the Global Market Day lead up series (starts Nov 15), I will not be engaged in RCRC or denominational work related activity for this period. I also want you to know that I have completely curtailed my involvement on the CRCA Synodical Interim Committee and the Ministry Formation Workgroup until July 2010.

My mobile is on 'total silent' (no ring, no rumble), and I'll be fielding calls through message bank only. Work related calls will not be responded to, but referred to RCRC and CRCA leaders/pastors. As with email, work stuff will be on-forwarded to the next appropriate person. If you have particular questions or needs, Clinton, Margaret, or one of the elders will be keen to assist you.

So what will I be doing? Well, a lot of reading, perhaps some writing, some riding, and I have this thing about learning how to sail.. so maybe I'll be tasting the salt and feeling the wind a little.

On Sundays, you will still see me around. I'll be at RCRC (even though I've been away the last two Sundays for other reasons), and I'll still be playing bass from time to time.

You're such a great church family, and I love you all heaps. I'm so thankful for God's provision, and how he is doing this wonderful work in you and through you all.

Isn't God great?

Grace & peace,

David Groenenboom

Just when you think it's all over and there isn't any hope left, God goes and does something amazing. Just when everything seems lost, God reveals his mighty plan of redemption and victory. This is how things go at the end of the Samson story. When we think it's hopeless for him, God shows up and kicks some serious butt! This week we're gonna get a big reminder of how loving and faithful our God is. From him and this story we can know that when things seem low in life, God is at work doing something great! Don't miss the ending! Judges 16:22-31.

Can You Help?

Posted 4 November 2009, 6:17 AM by Wendy Hammond. Permalink

In the last month Tracy and I have had contact with a local family struggling with Melanoma. Last Friday Sharon was told that the melanoma had metastasized and that all they could offer was palliative care. It puts Sharon and her husband John, and their two children, in a much similar position to us a couple of years ago. In the last couple of days Sharon has decided to attempt the same treatment protocol that we undertook at the time. As you may remember, it's quite demanding. They haven't requested this, but we have offered to put a call out for help in the church for them. They require some people to grow seeds, possibly do some juicing, and there maybe some other small roles to be played. And especially, even though Sharon is not a believer, she has asked that the church might pray for her. Tracy and I see this as a great opportunity for us to witness to them. So please pray for Sharon and John and their boys, please also pray for us as we witness to them, and if you are in a position to help, please let me know, or email Sharon directly on s2.price@optusnet.com.au Sharon and John live in Wynnum.

This week we see the climactic downfall of our psycho saviour Samson. He's never been what you'd call a 'standup citizen', but it's at the end of his career that he hits a new low. Like so many men in the Old Testament, he's brought down by a deceptive lover and his own weakness for women. She is Delilah. And in this story we find tow lessons, a moral one and a theological one. We learn from Samson that seduction is a real killer because it draws us away from our faithful God. And we learn from Samson that we are in need of a true Saviour without the weaknesses and failures of a sinful man. Jesus. Read Judges 16:1-21.

This Sunday we continue in our series on Repentance. Last week we looked at some of the basics, and saw that repentance is a throwing ourselves on the mercy of God, knowing that he extends kindness and grace to sinners. It is to turn from sin and to God, and to walk in his ways. But too often we view that as something that takes place at the start of the journey of faith. But this Sunday we are going to see that this is to be a practice of Christian living, turning from sin, and turning to our savior. We want to cover a big chunk of scripture this Sunday morning (Nehemiah 8-10) so any reading you can do before hand will be of great benefit.

When you get right down to it, Samson has all the characteristics of a terrorist. He's a freedom-fighting, lone-range guerrilla whose vicious acts of vengeance would've struck fear into the heart of anybody. As I said in the first week - he was a psycho!

And yet, what is so unbelievable about the story of Samson is that God stands by this vengeful man, even after he repeatedly exhibits his glaring vices. But God doesn't remain faithful to Samson because of who Samson is... He remains faithful to him for his own purposes - his purposes to deliver and to teach and to judge. God stands by the psycho because he loves his people.

Question Of The Week: How do you obtain a fresh jawbone of a donkey? Read Judges 15.

The prophets of the Old Testament called for it. It was the basis of John  the Baptist's ministry. I was the first thing that Jesus called people to do. It was the conclusion to the very first sermon ever preached by a pastor. It is REPENTANCE. Everyone knows that repentance is necessary, but do we actually know what it is? What are we responding to when we all called to repent, what do we actually do, and what does it do in our lives? This Sunday we begin a new 3 part series in REPENTANCE. Read ahead in Luke 18:9-14 and Luke 19:1-10.

We are used to our heroes standing out from the crowd. They wear lycra pants, capes, masks, and leap across tall buildings. You can not help but get the feeling that they are special, different from everyone else. They fight for good in the world full of evil. But in Samson we find something really bizarre. Our hero looks like everyone else. Sure, he is strong, but when it comes to morals and virtue, he doesn't just look like everyone else, he is actually worse than most. Hardly the stuff we expect from our Bible heroes. But then is Samson really who we should be looking at here - or is there something else? Maybe we should be looking behind the scenes - to see the work of our Hero God. Read ahead in Judges 14. (Note verse 18, one of my favorites in the Bible "If you had not plowed with my heifer..."

Why you should come back to God... Some many people would not even consider matters of faith, or having a relationship with God. Do they have any idea about the God they think they can do without? And sin. It seems many people don't get the whole 'sin' thing - we just don't know what to do with that whole idea. What if God was more wonderful than you could imagine, and what if sin was more insidious, uglier than your worst dreams - what then? Come Sunday, and find out...

10th Anniversary Celebration Tomorrow 9am!

Posted 10 October 2009, 12:47 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

Hi Church family!

Just one last invite to you all to come and celebrate God's goodness with us tomorrow morning at 9am. We have so much to be thankful for, so much to acknowledge of God's wonderful grace, the presence of His Spirit and the awesome power of His Son, Jesus Christ.

I am looking over the program for tomorrow, and moved at the prayerful creativity of God's people as they seek to honour him. Wow! God has blessed us so wonderfully!

After the service were celebrating with shared lunch, games and fun stuff for the kids, and just good times together in community.

So come! Come early! Come ready to honour the Lord of our years!

The Psalm writer says

Thank you for responding to me;

You've truly become my salvation!

The stone the masons discarded as flawed is now the Capstone.

This is God's work!

We rub our eyes - we can hardly believe it!

This is the very day God acted - let's celebrate and be festive!

Salvation now, God! Salvation now!

Oh yes, God - a free and full life!

Ps 118

Postscript:

I've just left the Car Wash - finished just 30 minutes ago, and we've raised over $1000 for quake and tsunami relief! This is an incredible effort, and what a great sight it is seeing God's people work together to help others whose lives are broken.

Special thank to all involved: washers, driers, hangers-on, but most of all to God and his goodness for making this all possible.

Oh, and thanks to all those who answered about the 'lazy susan' - we have it sorted!

See you all tomorrow!

Shalom,

Elder Nominations Sought

Posted 7 October 2009, 8:43 PM by Wendy Hammond. Permalink

Eddie Bos and Greg Tenni have advised the Church Council that they would seek to conclude their term of service at the close of this year. Church Council therefore is calling for nominations for new elders.

Elders are chosen according to biblical qualifications outlined in the New Testament (e.g. Acts 20:28; Rom 12:3-8; 1 Tim 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9). They are to be examples to the congregation in terms of spirituality and Christian life. They fully understand, support, promote and protect the mission and vision of this community. There is a full description of the elder's task attached. Please email your nominations to Pastor Dave

Nominations will close on October 13
