Mid week News

This Sunday

This week I'll be starting a new series on the OT book of Esther in the mornings: It's a short book with plenty of juicy bits. Try and read it once a week during the series. It's especially helpful to read it through in one go a few times - it helps to give a sense of the overall story... this Sunday:

AM: When life is good...thank God (Esther 1-2) June 04

Sometime we are blessed beyond our expectations with opportunity and things going well. We can be tempted to think 'hey, this is the logical consequence of my ingenuity". Really? Should our response be governed by who we are or what we have done?? God wants us to realise that the good we have has come from him, and our call is to honour him in that.

PM: God’s plan is to unite, protect and advance his kingdom in the world

So far in this series in David we have seen God anoint, empower, and protect his king. We have seen David respond as a man / king who is after God’s own heart, trusts God and desires to see God’s honor above all things. But what is this all in aid of? This Sunday evening we begin to see what God is accomplishing through all this, for the kingdom of Israel, and how he is still about the same things in our world today, through his king Jesus.

Discover your gifts and how to use them!

The Bible tells us that as each member uses the gifts the Lord has given them the body of Christ moves toward maturity in thought, ministry and witness. RCRC will be running a course during June and July to help people find out where their gifts lie and how they can serve the Lord better. The course will be held over four Monday nights:

June 19
June 26
July 3
July 10

Each night will run between 7pm and 9pm. This course will help participants understand better who God has uniquely made them to be, and help them understand their place of meaningful service in the church. Learn about how the church works together, and the importance of your own contribution.

Register by emailing dave@redlandscrc.org.au

Cost: $20 to cover your books and materials

DVDs of services now available

Know someone who can't get to RCRC on Sundays? Why not take something of RCRC to them! DVDs of the complete service are available by pre-order. Each DVD costs $5.00. You can arrange this through Frank Hemelaar: frank@royalfoods.com.au

Bunk Beds anyone?

Dave's neighbour has a good set of white tube steel bunks with mattresses to give away to a good home. Interested? Ring Jenny Smith on 0437 640 053 to stake your claim.

Do we know if you are coming to breakfast?

Email office@redlandscrc.org.au to reserve your bacon and eggs, or phone the church office on 3286 4700

If there are any high school students available to help look after small children during the discussion, please email or ring the church office.

Brisbane Kids Games - Update

We are no longer talking weeks, its only 21 days until BKG starts. This week enrolments started to come in, which is very exciting to see as parents and kids get ready for this week. As a team we have been getting ready as well, with a leaders meeting this last week, and a team training day yesterday, Saturday.

Enrolments (IMPORTANT):

It has come to our attention that a number of people have read the forms as being $25 per day for a child, where it is actually $25 for the week. If you have friends who are thinking of sending children along, please bring this to their attention.

As enrolments come in we really want to encourage our own children to participate. Please enroll them this week.

For Volunteers

Remember we have a team meeting after the service this morning. It is really important that every one comes along because there is some important information to share with the group at this time.

For Everyone

Please consider whether you will be able to help with this week. Everyone can…
• Encourage people they know to enroll their children
• Come along and do some cleaning one afternoon to get the church ready for the next day.
• Pray for the event

We would also like to invite people to come along for a BBQ and Bush Dance on the Friday evening (30th June) here at the church. But we want to invite you for a very specific purpose – to speak, welcome and make feel at home visitors from our local community.

Prayer Points:

• Please pray for the children and parents of the community as they consider enrolling
• Pray that God’s Spirit will open up hearts and speak the truth of God into them
• Pray for the team members, as they seek to get everything organized
• Pray for all volunteers, for open hearts to receive the kids
• Pray for safety during the week (and great weather too!)

Month of Prayer: Thursday, June 01

The Church Council calls the RCRC congregation to a month of concerted prayer with regard to our future facility needs and our mission in this community.

  • Thank God for the “trust” we have been given in the Gospel (v.4)
  • What form has this taken at Redlands? What responsibilities does this place on us?
  • Ask that he will open our eyes to the best ways to respond as a church.

If you haven't told us your coming to the breakfast, 7:30am Saturday @ RCRC, please email Ingeborg: office@redlandscrc.org.au

Call to Prayer during June

Posted 30 May 2006, 10:37 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

The Church Council calls the RCRC congregation to a month of concerted prayer with regard to our future facility needs and our mission in this community. We are all aware that the facility in Ormiston is coming under strain, and that further land has been purchased on Boundary Rd, Thornlands.

Choices about whether to or how to relocate, and what role church planting plays in this, are not clear cut. With regard to Boundary Rd, there are matters relevant to town planning, environment, main roads, etc. which require some investigation and the implications of these reports are at this stage unknown.

One thing is for sure: we cannot entertain the thought of doing nothing. 90% of our local community still lives outside the love of Christ. The Lord has blessed us richly these last years, and rather than have us think that the work has been done, Church Council is of the mind that these rich blessings may well indicate that our work is yet to begin.

With this in mind we ask you to pray that God will speak into every person’s heart so that we come to the meeting on Saturday with a clear vision of how are we might respond to what God has given us.

Friends, we are serious about being open to the Lord’s leading in this, and invite you to partner with us in this season of prayer. Please use this next month for reflection, prayer, discussion, and seeking the Lord’s will. We especially encourage you to ask the Lord for open minds, humble hearts, and a deep sense of unity as we walk ahead together.

Brisbane Kids Games

Well, we are now down to 4 weeks to go until kidsgames gets under way. Last weekend the 'coaches' attended a training day on their specific area of responsibility, and they came back with some great ideas, and a fair bit of work. It is going to be a busy 4 weeks. Here are a few things to remind you of.

Enrolements:

Forms are out now in the church hall, on the notice board. Please take one for your children, grandchildren, neighbours. We are starting to get enrolements in and would be disappointed if your children missed out. Please return the completed forms to Clinton or the office.

Volunteers:

A reminder of this Saturday's training day, at Bayside Christian Family Church, Preston Road, Wynnum West, from 9am to 3pm. You will have noticed that this is a slight clash with the breakfast to be held at the church. The idea is that we all go to the breakfast, and head off as soon as possible to the training day.

There will also be a volunteers meeting after the morning service on the 4th June (next Sunday) to run through the program, and look at different roles for the week. A MUST for volunteers.

More help required:

Over the last week, as we get closer, a few volunteers have pulled out because of other commitments. This leaves us with a few gaps that we would love to fill. If you have 1 or 2 mornings that week. This will be a huge help.

Prayer:

Please continue to pray for:

  • Children that receive the flyers, that they will enrole
  • God's peace to be on the program
  • Parents of kids, that we might have great contact with them
  • The volunteers, for their openness to the children
  • The team, for strength and patience to get it all done

Coming to breakfast?

Posted 24 May 2006, 6:30 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

Breakfast Meeting: June 03, 7:30am – Please come!

A Redlands CRC church family breakfast is planned for June 03 at 7:30pm – and we’re praying the hall will be packed!

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss various options about future expansion. Our development application for Boundary Rd has been lodged with Redland Shire Council, and their initial response has asked us to demonstrate how the planned facility will meet the current zoning and planning criteria. They have further asked us to indicate how various regulations (eg. run off water, environmental issues, car parking) will be met. These are typical questions to be asked of any sizable development in this context. More detail will be given at the meeting.

In particular, Church Council seeks to approach this meeting with the following goals

·         Listen to the congregation. Every voice is worth hearing: we are the body of Christ together. We need to move ahead into the future with a warm consultative approach

·         Review and clarify our vision: what are the truly important foundational issues that will guide us as we resolve the questions before us? What impact does our vision have on:

o       The Boundary Rd property and the options it presents?

o       Our current property and the options we currently have?

o       Any other possibilities that may be on the horizon

·         Church Council encourages the congregation to a month of focussed prayer during June, specifically

o       That the Lord would give us a sensitivity to the needs of our community and how we as his people might be used to address those needs

o       That he would impress His will on our hearts by His Holy Spirit as to what He would have us do with regard to our future planning

o       That He would give us a sense of urgency to this task, a spirit of unity in our calling, and a shared clarity as to how we move ahead together

Please let Ingeborg know your coming to the breakfast: we wouldn't want you to miss out on your bacon and eggs! Ingeborg's contact details: Church Office 3286 4700; 0417 791 097; email: office@redlandscrc.org.au

Church Council would also ask you to pray for the meeting representative of Church Council will have with Redland Shire Mayor, Don Seccombe, Divisional Councillor Debra Henry, and representative of the Town Planning department. This meeting will be held on site, and has been planned for Friday May 26 at 2pm.

Blessings, and see you on the 3rd!

Breakfast Discussion Meeting: Boundary Road

The Church Council would like to host a special discussion meeting on Saturday Jun 03 from 7:30am. The purpose of this meeting will be to open discussions about the Boundary Rd property.

Since the lodging of a development application at the end of March, we have received an initial response from the Redlands Shire Council. No doubt, there are plenty of questions people have about what opportunities the Boundary Road property offers,; how we can move ahead; what it all means, etc. We would like the discussion of these things to be as open as possible as we follow the processes through. We would value your input! This meeting will no doubt be the first of a number of discussion meetings.

Given that evenings are very busy, and the subject matter will probably take more time than what we can allow on a Sunday, we thought the breakfast meeting would be a good idea. It will also be a great opportunity for fellowship together!

When: Saturday Jun 03, 7:30am

Where: RCRC

Who: as many as possible

What: a lovingly cooked breakfast, open discussion

Reserve your place: Phone or Email Ingeborg 0417 791 097; office@redlandscrc.org.au

Mid Week News

This Week

Sunday AM: So David  proves himself to be the 'man after God's own heart.' He is obedient, he gives honour to God, its all going well. And so we would expect God to reward him with aneasy life, a free run into kinship, happiness, wealth, wholeness, right? Guess again. Like us, David experiences immense struggle and hardship as a follower of God and a witness in the world. In fact, he spends the next major passage of his life constantly on the run, harassed, persecuted. But during that time, he learns some lessons, about God, about struggle and about how to cope with hardship. Lessons that he passes on to us, for our benefit and encouragement in the form of Psalm 34. This week we will look at this period of David's life, and reflect on the things he passes on to us through this Psalm. Read ahead.

Sunday PM: Da Vinci: Who was Jesus, really? (John 20:24-31) Now that we have seen that the New Testament text is trustworthy, and the church did not tamper with the books that make up the NT - are we any closer to seeing who Jesus really is? Will the answer comfort us or disturb us? Why is there so much opposition to the Jesus of the New Testament? And what about those claims of Jesus being married to Mary Magdalene, them having kids, the decendants of whom live today? Is there any truth anywhere, and how can we ever know? Come Sunday night and find out. Bring a few friends, and talk about it afterward. We may even run a Q & A  after the service if there's enough interest.

Brisbane Kids Games

Its just 5 weeks away now… Here is just an update on where things are at for Brisbane Kid’s Games. The Team: The team for the kid’s games is as followers:           Team Manager:                 Clinton          Teaching:                        Tracy Sikkema          Admin:                            Janette Hemelaar          Craft:                               Theresa Moormann          Prayer:                            Wendy Murphy          Sport:                              Carlee Spiers          Family:                            Debbie Wullschleger And there are a host of other volunteers filling a variety of roles. Please pray for the team over the next 6 weeks as there is a lot of work to be done For Kid’s And Parents: Registrations are now open for the program which runs from June 25th to July 2nd. Information and enrolments slips are in the church hall. Please fill out and return to the office, or Clinton, with money. Numbers are limited, and with flyers going out to 12000 kids in this area, we would hate for you to miss out. For Volunteers: A number of people have indicated their willingness to be involved, and we really appreciate that. There are a couple of things that you should be aware of: Firstly, there is a training day for all volunteers on Saturday 3rd June, from 9am to 3pm, at Bayside Christian Family Church, Preston Rd, Wynnum West. More details to come.  Secondly, all volunteers in any capacity must have a current Blue Card. If you have not already, please see Ingeborg about getting on to this. If you have a card, please email or give the number to Janette or Clinton. We will hold a brief team meeting after the morning service on Sunday 4th June. If you have volunteered and can only make it for certain days of the week, please let Clinton know. For the whole church: We would really appreciate your support for this exciting and challenging opportunity. One thing we can all do is pray, and bring the leaders, the children, and parents before God. But also, we do require help in a few areas that we will make known in the next couple of weeks. But for now… Firstly, child care. Some volunteers have children who are too young to participate in the program. We would love to find a few people who could open up their homes (or use someone else’s home) to care for these children while parents are serving. If you could help for 1, 2 or even 5 days, we would love to hear from you. Secondly, more volunteers. We would love to have a few more people to help in the kitchen, in craft, in groups and with teaching. Please pray about this and let us know.

Hi Parents

Little Daniel deBoer will be baptised this Sunday morning so the children who usually go straight to K@C when they arrive at church (Prep-Grade 3) will be asked to go into church with their families so they have the opportunity to witness the baptism and be involved. After the baptism the children will be asked to go to K@C. Thank you parents.

This Week

Sunday AM: Killing Giants

We live in a world where its very clear that bigger is better. No matter who we are and what we do there is someone who seems to do it better than us. And in this climate its easy to find ourselves competing. And we know that its possible for the same mindset to enter the church. But is it a matter of bigger is better? When we read of David and Goliath it begins to challenge this conception. It begins to get us looking in a completely different direction. It begins to get us thinking about small people in the hands of a massive God.

Sunday PM: Da Vinci: Have we got the right books?

Dan Brown claims that the New Testament has been tampered with, that we don't have books that should be in it, and that the message about Jesus we do have is corrupt. Is this correct? Who decided what books should be included in the New Testament, and what criteria did they use? Is this something we can be happy about?

Those Rostered on Catering next week...

Hi everyone,

Pre-synod has begun and the atmosphere is a buzz.
Just wondering if all of you could bring a bunch of tea-towels when you are on duty and then bring your own home again to wash.

It's also recommended that maybe you bring your own apron as well. Thanks, that will help with the limited tea-towel supply.

The catering roster has been modified slightly, click here to view the updated one.

See you soon.

Synod Opening Service

Redlands is happy to announce that the opening service of Synod will be held at our normal worship time of 5pm this coming Sunday afternoon. We looking forward to a bumper attendance, and you may wish to come just that little bit earlier to avoid the last minute rush.

It’s exciting to think that we will have people from all over the nation, and also about a dozen international guests. This will give us a very warm sense of fellowship with the wider body of Christ. Many of the Synod visitors will already be present on Sunday morning.

The Synod meeting will be discussing issues very relevant to the future of the church and the emphases and ethos we should be developing. Generally, discussions of public interest are held in the evening sessions. We will keep you up to date with what is coming up as soon as the program is set.

If you have questions you may direct them to synod@redlandscrc.org.au

Prayer

  • ·         Please keep these very special meeting in your prayers for the next ten days. There is a lot of ground to cover. The delegates need a great deal of wisdom to make decisions that will glorify God, and lead to a strong and healthy church.

  • ·         Please also pray for those in Redlands and other congregations who have Synod guests with them. Give thanks for the gift of hospitality

Upcoming Sermon Mini Series: Answering Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code

With the release of the movie version of the da Vinci Code on May 18 it would be wise to be prepared for the inevitable questions people will ask about the movie's content.

The three message series starts next Sunday:

April 30 AM- Da Vinci - Is the Bible God's Word?

Is the Bible really God's word? Can it be trusted? How can we know this, really? What is the historical and manuscript evidence for the New Testament, and how does that compare with other ancient books?

May 14 PM - Da Vinci - Where did the New Testament come from?

Who decided what books to include? Is this a conspiracy? An arbitrary decision? How did our current New Testament 'happen'?, and are there other documents like the recently publicised "Gospel of Judas" that really should be included?

May 21 PM - Da Vinci - Is Jesus really divine?

Is it true that the Council of Nicaea (325 AD) basically agreed that Jesus should be regarded as divine, and then only by a narrow vote? Was the vote rigged? What should we believe? Can we trust what the Bible says about any of this? More importantly: can we trust Jesus?

Teacher Update

Two wonderful people have come forward to volunteer their time to be teachers, an answer to prayer. These new teachers will replace 2 teachers which are leaving, however, we still have a great need to create an extra class and therefore still need 2 more teachers. Our grade 4/5 class currently has 21 regular children with one teacher. The teachers sharing this class are doing an amazing job but as you can imangine it is difficult to form relationships and engage with children on a one to one basis with so many of them and one teacher. Having more teachers will allow us to split this class so we can focus more on each child. Please pray that the Lord will bring forward capable and committed people willing to teach.

Kids@Church Teachers Roles

Purpose: A Christian adult who guides, loves, teaches and cares for the children in a specific class. The teacher prays for the children in the class, desires to build a relationship with them, and thoughtfully and prayerfully plans and implements classroom ministry.

Length of Commitment: One year. There are 2 teachers per class. Teachers are rostered on for one month and then off for one month. There is no teaching during the school holidays. This totals approx 18 lessons per year.

Time required: Approx 1hr preparation per week when rostered on. 1 hr teaching on Sunday when rostered on.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare lessons in advance and come to teach thoroughly prepared
  • Attend 4 teacher training events per year
  • Pray regularly for each child in your class, your teaching ministry and other volunteers on your team
  • Be an example - you represent Christ in your class
  • Be committed to the values and vision of RCRC and our children's ministry
  • Have a heart, passion and love for children
  • Be creative!
  • Have FUN!

Brisbane Kid’s Games:

A big thank you to all those who have already volunteered their time for Brisbane Kid’s Games. The turn out has just been fantastic. However, the more people we have who can be involved the better the ministry will be and the lighter the load for all. So if you think you would like to be involved please see Clinton. The program is the 25th June to 2nd July, although there are some things that need doing in the next 2 months as well.

Specifically we are seeking to fill the following:

Prayer Coach – a person who is going to pull together and keep informed a prayer team.

Administration Coach – a person who can co-ordinate a number of the ‘support’ areas to BKG

Family and Follow Up Coach – a person who can seek to make continued contact with the children and families who participate in the ministry.

If one of these fits you, please talk to Clinton.

Thank you again for your support and prayers.

Prayer

Dear Church Family,

Could you please continue to uphold Anna and Albert Verkruissen in your prayers.

Albert went back to the doctor this morning for his 2 weeks check-up on the operation that he had on his eye.  The outcome was that the doctor was disappointed with the result and healing to date, and that Albert was to continue the practice of keeping his head laid down for 45 minutes, and then sitting up for 15 minutes for the next two weeks.  Albert is not allowed to sleep during the day, which means that both Anna and Albert should sleep better at night.  However the stress of all this is taking its toll on Albert, in that the shaking relating with Parkinsons is showing more.

Please pray for Anna, that she will have extra strength to help Albert in this time, and that she is not discouraged with the slower than anticipated healing process.  Also pray for Albert, for healing, and that he will have patience too.

Answering Dan Brown

Monday Mailbox

Dear friends,

On May 18 our cinemas will commence showing the Da Vinci Code, a movie based on Dan Brown’s best selling fiction novel. There’s a part of me that wants to say, “O, please just go away…” because it just seems to be a high nuisance-factor diversion. I find it hard to devote time and resources to a story that bears little resemblance to historical fact, decent scholarship, and (in the minds of at least some) any literary merit.

There is no doubt that the Da Vinci Code  movie could present us with some great challenges. Christians will need to know how to answer some of the questions people will raise. And, friends, people will raise them. Some have reported how reading the novel challenged their faith in God. Others, or how it confirmed their suspicion of the church. As hard as it may be for us to acknowledge these challenges, these consequences are real.

How important it is then for every Christian to be informed (at least as well as they can be) about the reliability of the New Testament account. How critical it is for us to remember some of the basic material we covered last Sunday night: to submit our minds, thoughts and rational capabilities to God and His word.

On the other hand, the Da Vinci Code presents followers of Jesus with some unique opportunities:

We can tell people who Jesus really is and what he has done for us. His forgiveness, grace and work in the lives of his followers is not fiction and can be historically verified

We can read up on how best to answer the claims of the Da Vinci Code. I would recommend (the first three are in the church library)

  1. The truth behind the Da Vinci Code
  2. Cracking the Da Vinci Code
  3. The real Da Vinci Code (ABC DVD)
  4. We can also make copies of an excellent sermon by John Ortberg, from Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, California. These can be ordered from Ryan Hemelaar for a gold coin donation (ryan@royalfoods.com.au).
  5. 'The Da Vinci Code - A Response' Nicky Gumble, who in his typically well reasoned and logical manner gets to the bottom of Brown’s claims and refutes them convincingly. Pick up a copy at Word, Koorong, and perhaps the Cleveland Christian Bookshop. It will cost about $4.00, well worth the money, and worth considering buying a few to give to friends.

Of course, the best way to help people find out about the real Jesus is to introduce them to him through witness or bringing them along to a service at your church.

In the weeks just prior to May 18, we hope to have a service or two that will deal with the Da Vinci Code subject matter. These will also be prime opportunities for you to invite guests. Please prayerfully consider this, an uphold your pastors as they prepare their messages.

Above all, continue to pray that you will be able to give an answer to everyone for the hope that you have (1 Pet 3:15).

Have a great week, church!

Sunday

AM: When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey people honored Him as their King. And still today we say and we sing that we aught to honor Jesus. But why? What makes him so worthy of the honor of our lives? This Sunday we will explore Psalm 24, a Psalm that looks forward to the coming of Jesus and describes why he is so deserving of the praise of our lives. Read ahead.

PM: "What to do when you doubt" - Just one week out from Easter and who is Jesus, really? What happens when we doubt? When there's nagging doubts about who Jesus is or what he came to do? Ignore them? Deny them? Feed them? Come Sunday night and find out...

Mid Youth Tonight (Friday)

What's on? Games Night.

Prepare to get messy!

See you at the church from 7:00pm - 9:30pm

Cyclone Larry Car Wash

Who could not be moved by what we have witnessed after Cyclone Larry tore through the Innisfail district.  Time to grab those chamois.  It's too far to go to swing a hammer or carry water from the well, but here's an opportunity to do what we can.

Time & date:        8am - 2pm on Saturday 29th April

Venue:                   Redland Christian Reformed Church

What to bring:    Materials supplied, come with a smile and team spirit.

Once again we will run three shifts washing cars :  8-10, 10-12 & 12-2.  We would like to have about 10 people per shift.  Please contact Damien or Helen Watson on 3821 5181 or e-mail damienwatson@optusnet.com.au .  Bring your kids.  At the last car wash it was great to see parents and kids working together.  Those that weren't washing were doing the 'wobble board' thing advertising at the front of the church

We are also looking for a couple of people per shift to give our customers a friendly welcome and offer them a chair & cuppa while they wait.  This is an important part of the day - a great opportunity to build relationships with people in the community.

20twenty updated

We told you last week the team would fill fast – 9 of the 11 places in the RCRC side have been taken! That means you who was thinking about emailing josh@royalfoods.com.au and signing up (or finding out more) had better get a wriggle on. And the square leg umpire position is also still available. Even you would only like to umpire for 1 or 2 weeks, we’d love to hear from you!

If you have said you are in, this Saturday at 2:30pm we are going down to the nets to get in a bit of practise and to meet the team. Mary Pleasant Drive in Birkdale (Just past the shopping centre) on the Birkdale primary school oval there. Bring whatever gear you have as well as any cricket balls you have lying around.

Hopefully the rest of the Church has read on to this part were we’re asking for some prayer support. Here are some ideas:

  • Those in the team who don’t know the Lord à this is the big one!
  • Relationships between all of us involved
  • Protection from injuries

Prayer

  • Peter Barker and Shelley Woods, who will be married tomorrow. Pray for a rich blessing in their lives and in their home

  • Cor Dekker who continues daily radiation treatment – pray for strength, endurance, and the assurance of the Lord’s faithfulness
  • Safe arrival of Abbey Louise Harrison to Leroy and Leeanne last week
  • Stewart and Cheryl Harrison, with Katelyn and Ethan, moving back to Canada this coming week: may the Lord go with you, friends
