Coffee Roster

Posted 14 October 2009, 4:51 PM by Wendy Hammond. Permalink

COFFEE ROSTER volunteers needed please. We have a wonderful group of people who provide morning tea/coffee after the morning service.  There are always two couples rostered on - so the full responsibility doesn't fall with one family. We would love to add some names to this roster - ideally we would like to have enough people on our lists that you are only rostered a couple of times a year.  It is a great way to serve and meet people, so please consider adding your names to our list. Please contact Margaret in the Office  - mnugent@redlandscrc.org.au or 3286 4700.

Creche

VOLUNTEER HELPERS are needed for the morning crèche. If you have a Blue Card and would like to be on a roster to help in this way once every few weeks then we would love to hear from you. (The more helpers, the fewer times that you will be rostered on).  If your child is in crèche, then you can go on the roster straight away and share the load!  Please contact Margaret in the office to have your name put on the roster mnugent@redlandscrc.org.au or 3286 4700

We are used to our heroes standing out from the crowd. They wear lycra pants, capes, masks, and leap across tall buildings. You can not help but get the feeling that they are special, different from everyone else. They fight for good in the world full of evil. But in Samson we find something really bizarre. Our hero looks like everyone else. Sure, he is strong, but when it comes to morals and virtue, he doesn't just look like everyone else, he is actually worse than most. Hardly the stuff we expect from our Bible heroes. But then is Samson really who we should be looking at here - or is there something else? Maybe we should be looking behind the scenes - to see the work of our Hero God. Read ahead in Judges 14. (Note verse 18, one of my favorites in the Bible "If you had not plowed with my heifer..."

9am Service

Why you should come back to God... Some many people would not even consider matters of faith, or having a relationship with God. Do they have any idea about the God they think they can do without? And sin. It seems many people don't get the whole 'sin' thing - we just don't know what to do with that whole idea. What if God was more wonderful than you could imagine, and what if sin was more insidious, uglier than your worst dreams - what then? Come Sunday, and find out...

10th Anniversary Celebration Tomorrow 9am!

Posted 10 October 2009, 12:47 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

Hi Church family!

Just one last invite to you all to come and celebrate God's goodness with us tomorrow morning at 9am. We have so much to be thankful for, so much to acknowledge of God's wonderful grace, the presence of His Spirit and the awesome power of His Son, Jesus Christ.

I am looking over the program for tomorrow, and moved at the prayerful creativity of God's people as they seek to honour him. Wow! God has blessed us so wonderfully!

After the service were celebrating with shared lunch, games and fun stuff for the kids, and just good times together in community.

So come! Come early! Come ready to honour the Lord of our years!

The Psalm writer says

Thank you for responding to me;

You've truly become my salvation!

The stone the masons discarded as flawed is now the Capstone.

This is God's work!

We rub our eyes - we can hardly believe it!

This is the very day God acted - let's celebrate and be festive!

Salvation now, God! Salvation now!

Oh yes, God - a free and full life!

Ps 118

Postscript:

I've just left the Car Wash - finished just 30 minutes ago, and we've raised over $1000 for quake and tsunami relief! This is an incredible effort, and what a great sight it is seeing God's people work together to help others whose lives are broken.

Special thank to all involved: washers, driers, hangers-on, but most of all to God and his goodness for making this all possible.

Oh, and thanks to all those who answered about the 'lazy susan' - we have it sorted!

See you all tomorrow!

Shalom,

Elder Nominations Sought

Posted 7 October 2009, 8:43 PM by Wendy Hammond. Permalink

Eddie Bos and Greg Tenni have advised the Church Council that they would seek to conclude their term of service at the close of this year. Church Council therefore is calling for nominations for new elders.

Elders are chosen according to biblical qualifications outlined in the New Testament (e.g. Acts 20:28; Rom 12:3-8; 1 Tim 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9). They are to be examples to the congregation in terms of spirituality and Christian life. They fully understand, support, promote and protect the mission and vision of this community. There is a full description of the elder's task attached. Please email your nominations to Pastor Dave

Nominations will close on October 13

Children's Worker

Posted 7 October 2009, 8:42 PM by Wendy Hammond. Permalink

Lauren Down's 6 month appointment will come to a close at the end of the year, when Lauren takes up a teaching role locally. Lauren's short time with us has been great for the ministry. While we always knew the appointment would be of a short duration, we're very sad to see her time as Children's Worker come to an end.

This means Church Council would like to receive expressions of interest from people who may want to explore the possibility of serving in this role. You can send your enquiry to Pastor Dave. Further information will follow at a later date.

9am Service Details - 10 year Celebration

Posted 7 October 2009, 8:39 PM by Wendy Hammond. Permalink

"Wow, 10 years!!! Its great, amazing. And what about the next 10, they're going to be cool too, right?

But what are we really celebrating when we look back over the last 10 years, and what is really worth looking forward to? This Sunday we will look at 1 Kings 8:56-61 and see Solomon's focus as the nation of Israel celebrates, and let God guide us as we celebrate on Sunday. Read ahead.

10th Anniversary Celebration

This coming Sunday is a special day of celebration - we're thanking God for 10 years as a church family!

This will be a special time of thanksgiving, starting with a combined service at 9am.  AM & PM people will all be together in the one place. There will be expressions of gratitude for the wonderful blessings God has given us, and there will also be times of prayer, expressions of dependence on his grace for the future, and a shared celebration of the Lord's Supper. This will be Clinton's first opportunity to open the Word with us following the family's return from leave!

There is no doubt that His wonderful grace has sustained us through some significant times of challenge, and there is also no doubt that he has acted to bless us beyond measure. We acknowledge this great God and hold him in the centre of all we have, all we are, and all we seek to attain.

We also would like to encourage members of the church family to give verbal expressions of thanks, share prayer, and even some words of encouragement. We're hoping that in this way we can all clearly give honour and glory to the God who is with us. If you'd like to participate in this way, please just email Dave so we can plan ahead.

In particular, I would encourage you to

  • come early
  • please fill up the overflow car park first, unless disability makes the extra walking a problem
  • if you normally come along to the 5pm service, we'd love you to join us for the 9am service this week. It's going to be such a blessing to all be together (there will be no 5pm service held this week)

After the celebration in worship, we will share a meal together. The idea is that we all bring something to share. Please remember: there may be people turning up on the day who were not aware of our celebration, so please bring a little extra as well if you can. God's loves it when his people are generous and hospitable!

This is what we're asking you to do about food:

  • If surname starts with A - J then please bring a plate of sweet food / desserts.
  • If surname starts with K - Z then bring a plate of savoury food.
  • BYO - Drinks, glasses, chairs and picnic rugs

Also, so the children have something to do, we're also planning

  • Jumping castle
  • Clown
  • Face Painters

It's going to be a great day, and we're asking you to pray that this itself will be a memorable day of worship and fun.

About 60 girls and 15 leaders will be attending our annual state camp at Luther Heights, Coolum Beach this coming weekend. We pray for fine weather, safe travels to and from camp and during our time there. We also pray that the message of the gospel will reach the hearts and lives of those girls we have in our care this weekend and that we do get some sleep!!

Please remember this ministry of our church as we celebrate this Sunday, as GEMS has also been running for over 10 years and has doubled in numbers this year, especially reaching out into the community. All praise to our Lord!

Samson was a man appointed by God even before he was born, much like Jesus. He was called to be one of God's Judges, set apart for God's purposes, and empowered by God's Spirit. Why? To deliver God's people from the hands of their enemies.

Because God is the deliverer and the hero - that is the point of the story of Samson. We don't focus on the man, but on the purposes God used him for. And where Samson failed, God's appointed Son did not. Through him we also have been set apart and empowered for God's work. Read Judges 13.

The Hard Saying of Jesus: "It is more blessed to give than to receive" We have all heard the words. We would say we believe them. But do we live them? How would this play out in a society that seems to live like it's more blessed to receive than to give? Where people strive to acquire, and where the economy is fuelled by the desire to possess? Would our community be any different if we really lived this truth? Read ahead at Luke 6:38, Acts 20:13-35 and think about key verses describing God as the great Giver

Chicks & Chat Sleepover: October 2

Posted 24 September 2009, 7:01 PM by Wendy Hammond. Permalink

On Friday 2nd October, Chicks Chat, a newly formed community group initiated by Lynne Rice (from the Matthew Stanley Foundation), will add a new twist to an age-old custom by hosting a sleep-over party that girls and their mums can attend together. This is a group funded and supported by the Matthew Stanley Foundation, other concerned Redland businesses, and the Redlands Christian Reformed Church. Chicks Chat is an opportunity for Redlands mothers and their daughters to explore their relationships. The main goal is to try to improve communication at this very critical age, in a non-confrontational way.

The event's organisers want young girls to maintain good feelings about themselves and develop their self confidence as they emerge into womanhood. This group of mums are committed to creating a very positive atmosphere and something that's a positive influence and fun for the girls and mums.

The sleep-over party program, with plenty of games, presentations, girly stuff, movies and so much more on the agenda and even a tasty dinner from Cleveland Pizza Capers and breakfast provided by IGA Cleveland to share, will also be a chance for girls to meet others their age. This is primarily to give the mums and girls a chance to get to know each other better and to spend time together.

Mums & daughters from Redlands CRC are most welcome to attend.

Wear your PJ's & bring sleeping bag, pillow, snacks and your sense of humour

Cost: ONLY $5pp

  • Lauren Woods and Pete Hollyock will be married this coming Saturday morning. Please uphold this young couple as they commence their marriage under the Lordship of Jesus
  • Oct 11 will be a great celebration of God's goodness in this our 10th year as a church family. We are planning a very special service that morning: an opportunity for the entire church family to be together in worship; then a shared lunch together, and plenty of time to relax together. Through it all, and in the lead up, we're asking 'what call and responsibility do this blessings place on us for the future?'. We encourage the church family to pray through these questions in preparation for our celebration.

Proverbs 1:1-7

Of course we all want to live well and right, and to understand what life means and where it's going. Well, we must start with God, the first step in learning is bowing down to God, for "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom".

The Book of Proverbs deals with some 50 or 60 different topics and the topic we meet most often in this book, is our speaking. Proverbs is full of godly counsel as to how to speak wisely, so as to please God, and build up the people around us.

And yet, we all sin in the way we use our tongue; no one has as yet been able to tame the tongue. But Christ, through His Holy Spirit, is in the business of tongue-taming!

My power is made perfect in weakness

The AFL Grand Final has just been played - which team contemplated being weaker on the day? Our society tells us to advance our own position at all costs. No one wants to be seen as weak, right? So, do we believe these words or not? Were they only relevant to Paul, or could it be that God's power will be seen in people who intentionally walk a path of weakness? And what is weakness anyway - and by whose measure? Read ahead at (2 Cor 12:1-10).

Many Australians have trouble believing in God. They look at world history and life situations tend to reason against His existence or that He cares. There are other things to look at, though, and some of these things provide compelling testimony that God is real and that he cares. Dan Neville will open this issue up for us on Sunday night, issuing us with a great challenge and a greater comfort. Read ahead at Ps 19 and Romans 1

  • We're celebrating 10 years on Oct 11th - God has blessed us so wonderfully. What might God want us to do in our community? Can you pray about that? Seek his guidance, and talk to us about how he leads you. God's will is best discerned in the context of community.
  • Tessa Brown and Matt Kippen will be married this Sunday afternoon at Mt Tambourine. Let's pray that God's grace will bless them richly as they start their life journey together. They'll be settling in Victoria Point after they return from their honeymoon - it will be great to have them back!

Forgive and you will be forgiven (Luke 6:37-38)

Forgiveness is something we all seek, and crave from those whom we have wronged. Why then is it so hard to give forgiveness to another? What happens when we don't forgive, and what might happen if we were to live forgiveness in all its fullness? This service will feature a very special discussion about forgiveness between Dave and a member of the RCRC family. This discussion will give us an insight into the freedom the grace of forgiveness can bring to people who have been deeply hurt. It is a very powerful story...
