 The Last Supper

It's three weeks to go till Easter, and today we're starting a new short series of sermons focussing on the gospel of Matthew, chapters 26-28, right up till Good Friday and Easter.
There's even a title for this series: The Way Up is Down.
The Kingdom of God runs counter to many of our expectations and beliefs. The disciples would find their beliefs about Jesus as Messiah challenged every step of His journey to the Cross. Their hopes for the restoration of Israel were anchored in political and economic victories as well as dreams of personal greatness, and how totally different did it all turn out!
The scene of 'The Last Supper' and everything that happens around it, shows Jesus' followers as ignorant, confused, fearful, even quarreling amongst themselves, while
their Master shows deep humility and a readiness to continue walking the road of suffering right up to the bitter end.
The passage for today will be Matthew 26: 17-30, but as Mark, Luke and John also write in detail about these final days for Christ, we will also look at some references from these gospel writers.
