It seems a little confusing to read that the child to be born will have the title ‘Everlasting Father’. It’s intriguing. How can Jesus, the Messiah, the second person of the trinity, be called the Everlasting Father? Is it right to call Jesus, Father? It is unlikely Isaiah has the Trinity in mind here at all. It’s not the Son’s role in the Godhead, but his character toward us that Isaiah has in mind. The title can also be translated literally as ‘Father of Eternity’. At the most basic level the title is simply affirming that the Messiah will reign forever. On a deeper level, Father of Eternity means that he is the Founder and Author, the Originator of a new way of life. A way of eternal life for all His subjects. Together we will explore how Jesus is the Father of the new and everlasting way.
