A Question of Ownership

The priests, teachers of the law, and elders fail to catch Jesus in his words, so they send their partners in crime to do their dirty work. On this particular day, Jesus is asked about the poll tax in an attempt to catch Jesus in his words. A ‘no’ answer would be seen as rebellion against Rome, while a ‘yes’ response could see him accused of blasphemy and
the crowd would become angry with him. But verse 15 shows Jesus’ wisdom. If coins bear Caesar’s image, then they belong to Caesar. Then Jesus adds, that humanity, which bears God’s image, belongs to God. What does that mean for you and me? Withholding taxes might get you into trouble but what are the consequences for not recognising the image of God?
