Last week we wrestled with the confronting truth, found in Romans 9, that God is utterly sovereign and free to choose for salvation whoever He wants. For us, that raises many important questions. Not least of which is, “if that is true, why does it matter what I do?” Thankfully, Paul does not finish his discussion of Israel and their salvation in chapter 9. He goes on and as he goes on he examines their responsibility for rejecting Jesus and even the need to preach the gospel so that people call on Jesus. For, ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ This is a great reminder on a day when 4 young people profess their faith, but it also seems completely contradictory. This morning we’ll take a look at that and why we need both
God’s sovereignty and our own responsibility.
