There are passages in the Bible that are, to say the least, disturbing. They are passages that are sometimes used to throw doubt on Christianity and to show that, if there is a God, he must be a terrible being. The early part of Exodus 21 is just such a passage, for there God seems to condone slavery. What are we to do with such passages? Do we try to excuse them out of the Bible? Or is there more going on here than we might first realise Tonight we will seek to understand what these verses are actually talking about and try to understand the principles behind them that can help shape our thinking today.
