Nehemiah was granted permission and the responsibility to take his people back toJerusalemto rebuild the broken city walls and gates. The repair was necessary to protect the ‘holy city’ from enemy attacks. After the work had begun, he faced scorn, slander, and threats from enemies, i.e. external threats, as well as fear and discouragement from his own people, i.e. internal threats. We also have a responsibility to safeguard our lives from spiritual attack. We are well aware of the external attacks that come upon us, but sadly, there are subtle attacks from within the christian community that hinder God’s work and destroy sections of his Church.
