Paul’s words here in Colossians are probably some of the most difficult and challenging verses in this letter to the Colossians. Laced with issues that we, in our context, bristle at. Quote these verses on social media and you will create a storm of protest. Mention wives submitting, kids obeying, and servants serving, and people get uncomfortable and even angry. It is why some people say the Bible is totally irrelevant for us today. Yet, even as these verses make us uncomfortable, the fact remains that they belong to Bible, which God inspired for our training in righteousness. So, we need to wrestle with why the verses are here and what they are saying to us today. Paul is writing about the Roman household code, but he switches things up and shows how families can live in unity with Jesus as the head and centre of the family. The words may seem harsh to us, but the understanding is beautiful and countercultural.
