During the crucifixion ‘at the sixth hour darkness came over whole land until the ninth hour.’ Darkness from midday to 3pm? Something ominous and evil is going on here because the darkness cannot readily be accounted for by natural phenomena. How would it feel to be standing there watching events as they unfold and being enveloped in darkness? That would freak me out big time. What is going on here? Amos alludes to it in his prophecy, “In that day,’ declares the Sovereign Lord, ‘I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.’” (8:9). What happened in those hours of darkness? We will think about that on Good Friday.
