When you read through our text for the first time, it looks a bit like a puzzle and you wonder what’s going on.Why is James being so blunt and direct? How do the verses link together? What’s going on? What can we learn from these verses? We need to realize that James is writing to believers like you and me. Can you imagine that? Believers involved in quarrels and conflicts? Probably you can, without too much effort. We are not immune to things like wars, fights, desires, murder, greed, and coveting. James identifies two primary conflicts that cause this trouble in the church. First, we are at war with each other and second, at war with God. These conflicts are deeply interrelated and flow from the human heart. A heart affected by sin. The key to dealing with this conflict, internally and externally, is humility. this is highlighted by the phrase, ‘God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble’.
