Jesus tells an interesting story about a shrewd manager and compliments him on the way he managed his master’s resources. Is Jesus commending dishonest business practices? Hardly! So what does He mean by saying “I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings” (v9)?
Perishable earthly wealth can be transformed into imperishable heavenly treasures with the proper use of money. We can be warmly welcomed into heaven by the way we use our money on earth for God’s Kingdom. What does that look like? Do people matter more to you than money? Invest in people more than money, because used for the gospel, it will make your wealth count for eternity. You will see the greatest return for your investment when you get to spend eternity with people who heard about Jesus through you. That’s using the Master’s resources to invest in people’s lives for eternity, and you’ll also have friends to welcome you.
