Babies are cute. They’re not supposed to inspire awe. Maybe that’s why people find it so easy to trivialise Christmas. Baby Jesus lying helpless in a manger can be viewed with mild affection. People are unlikely to be offended by a baby and
it’s why they can quickly move on with life. But who is this baby to Matthew? The virgin-born child predicted by Isaiah. He is Immanuel, God with us. We should be in awe of this baby for in him the glory of the Lord shines through; he is the Saviour we all need. As we gather today, let’s do it with a sense of awe and gratitude for what the Lord has done for us.
