Mark: Jesus in a Box

In Mark 6:6, we have this amazing statement that should cause us to stop in our tracks, “And he [Jesus] was amazes at their lack of faith.” The context is the unbelief in him and the offense at him of the people in his home town of Nazareth. It is a sobering thing to have the very Son of God stand astonished at your unbelief! Are we at risk of unbelief? I think for most of us the danger is not overt unbelief, but the subtle unbelief of forgetfulness; familiarity that diminishes our awe. are we so familiar with church, Christianity and Jesus the Man that we completely miss or forget Jesus, the Son of God? The people of Nazareth thought they knew who Jesus was so they ended up asking disdainfully (as Eugene Petersen puts it), “Who does he think he is?” What about you? Have you put Jesus in a box, where you have it all worked out? The identity of Jesus is a consistent theme in Mark. In the gospel, we hear the opinions of the rulers, religious authorities, crowds, disciples and family members. For the author of Mark, the important question keeps coming around to “who do you, the reader, say Jesus is?”
