Last Words: I Am Thirsty

I am thirsty! It’s such a simple and short statement. We say it often. It’s a common condition of the human body. As we read the suffering of Jesus we become acutely aware that this suffering was very real and very physical. What he suffered is in many ways unimaginable, especially since it was so undeserved. But not only was he experiencing a physical thirst, it was a spiritual thirst as well. Think of the others words he spoke from the cross, ‘My God, my God why have you forsaken me?’ The experience of Jesus’ thirst was so that we need not suffer the agony of spiritual thirst, of the emptiness of the soul and the forsakenness of God. We should never loose perspective on just how much Jesus suffered for our sake.
