Philip Ryken, in his commentary on Exodus, writes,’In the end Pharaoh was defeated by mighty forces like darkness and death. But long before the sky turned black over Egypt and the angel of death snatched the firstborn son, it was the little things that got to Pharaoh – little things like lice and flies. One of the wonders of the exodus is that God used tiny insects to demonstrate his power over Pharaoh and his gods.’Flies! God used flies to humble Pharaoh and the Egyptians. Flies speak to us of filth, disease, contamination and nuisance. Flies in the land was bad news for everyone – everyone that is, except the Israelite slaves, they were untroubled by this plague, for throughout the area of Goshen not a fly was to be seen. What is going on here? Again we turn to the plagues of Egypt and see what God is doing to redeem his people.
