At first glance it appears that this passage in Mark is about sacrificial giving; that the widow who gave two small copper coins is giving so much more out of her poverty than the rich are giving out of their abundance and so we too should give sacrificially like the widow. However, in a closer reading of the text, maybe there is more going on here than that? Jesus points out the poor woman who has just given two small coins and says “she, out of her poverty, put in everything- all she had to live on. We could, and maybe should, admire her but we have to connect what Jesus says back to verse 40 where the Teachers of the law ‘devour widows’ houses’. Jesus is highlighting the unjust temple system and exploitation of the poor. This widow is a victim of the system. But, so what? How do we care for the vulnerable and the poor?
