What happens in the Garden of Gethsemane is a particularly focused example of what had been going on throughout Jesus’ life. In the person of Jesus, we find the perfect relation of the divine will and a human will. The entire time Jesus was in the garden, there was a struggle for His will. Jesus had always done God’s will, but now he faced the greatest challenge of His life, and He had to be in total submission to His Father’s will. Soon He would carry the sins of the whole world to the cross, but first He had to face the temptation to resist the will of God. Jesus did not want to have to go to the cross and endure the suffering, but he submitted not to his own will but to the will of the Father. What if Jesus had not followed the Father’s will? What might have been the result? Would we have a path of salvation?
